You know what’s scary? DevOps. The culture shift, the constant collaboration, the new sets of tools — it’s quite a lot to handle. Everyone’s looking for the coveted smooth-running software development pipeline.
At LogiGear, we stopped using the phrase “DevOps” and replaced it with the term “Continuous Delivery.” There are many reasons for this change, but to name a few:
- Continuous Delivery sounds less intimidating than all the big issues that surround DevOps.
- Continuous Delivery seems like what teams are actually looking for.
- My work primarily deals with developers and testers, not IT, Release Engineers, Configuration Management, Operation, etc. I focus on the people side of DevOps.
It’s important to know what you’re talking about when you say DevOps or Continuous Delivery. If you’re unsure, read about DevOps and familiarize yourself with the terms used. LogiGear Magazine has numerous helpful articles that can fill you in on the latest terminology.
Last summer, we published our first DevOps issue, focused on all areas of testing in DevOps. In this first issue, we featured a two-part series by Sanjeev Sharma, “Understanding DevOps,” and “Adopting DevOps.” Another contributor, Sanjay Zalavadia, writes about best practices to create a test-driven development environment and Tim Hinds discusses how QA fits into DevOps. You can read this issue here (PDF).
Now, a year later, we’ve focused our second DevOps issue on testing in CD. We kick-start this issue on “Mega Trends in Continuous Delivery, Production Line, and the Deployment Pipeline” then move onto some excellent contributors with CD expertise. Eric Minick from IBM gives us an alternative perspective on CD, using Amazon shipping as a deployment analogy, and Alex Martins from CA Technologies advises us on the best way to get your team ready for the shift. In order to help really hone in on your CD skills, we have a special guest, Bas Vodde from Odd-e, review one of the most notable books in the field before you delve in.
We’re excited to announce our new published results of the Testing in Continuous Delivery survey. This survey was the second of a four-part series that we’re releasing this year to gauge perception of the software testing industry. What tools are DevOps practitioners regularly using? How is team collaboration, communication and awareness of testing activity? Is there more pressure to automate? How have DevOps practices impacted product release? If you’re curious, find out the answers in our latest issue of LogiGear Magazine!
